What is a card access system?
Simply stated , it is a locking system that uses a "digital" key (card) , however unlike a mechanical keyed locking system it has the ability to make decisions based on programmed logic.
This flexibility allows greater control over entry doors and can be integrated into elevator control as well as activating devices on a schedule such as turning on/off lights or equipment.
Why would I use a Card instead of a Key?
If your organization uses keys to lock doors, access control can offer you two distinct advantages - better security and potential cost savings.
Keys can't be regulated and if they are lost or stolen can pose a security threat to your organization unless new locks are installed. For large buildings, this can
be an expensive and time-consuming proposition. With a Keyscan system, each individual is issued a card for accessing doors or elevators.
Each card can be regulated so you control access. And, if a card is lost or stolen, it can be cancelled in seconds rendering it useless. It's more economical and much quicker to issue one new card than to call in a locksmith to re-install new locks and issue new keys.
In addition to cards, there are an assortment of tags and tokens available.
Door Control Benefits
The prime purpose of an access control system is just that, to regulate and monitor access at each door.
From 24 hour access, to time-limited access, to no access, you set specific conditions that apply for each individual at every door ( or piece of equipment ).
Allow users 24 hour access to enter via the main entrance or restrict usage of a piece of equipment or deny access to an area during a certain time period.
Access control is not limited to doors it can also be used to keep unauthorized people from accessing a potentially dangerous piece of equipment while still allowing them access to the area.
With access control you can limit a window of opportunity in which a card will operate an entrance for delivery person or limit access to a contractor such as a maintenance person restricting both area of access and time.
As an added benefit the access control software records all door activity giving you a complete audit trail, which can be quickly compiled into easy-to-read reports. |
