Congratulations Sue Hulton!
Just this past Sunday (Nov. 16), our Accounts Receivable Administrator Sue Hulton celebrated 25 years with Alliance Alarms!!
Tell me about yourself, who is Sue Hulton?
I am the wife of a good husband and the mother of three sons that are all grown up with three lovely daughter-in-laws. I also have two grandchildren, little boys and I love them all dearly.
What do you like to do outside of the office?
I’m quite artistic, I enjoy painting and drawing. I take lots of courses, including a Spanish language learning course I took a couple of years ago!
I also love animals. I have a rescue dog named Kiki. She’s an Alaskan Malamute/Doberman/Shepard mix. She’s 14 months old and we adopted her from the Napanee Humane Society in July 2014. She loves hugs and kisses. She loves her squeaky toys, sometimes she likes to annoy people with them. She loves to play ball, go for long walks and snuggle. She thinks she’s a lap dog! I also have a two year old goldfish named Goldie.
I love staying active, I walk the dog every day and I go to AquaFit. I also enjoy gardening and I love to cook and try new recipes.
I love this community and enjoy giving back. I was a Leader and a Trainer for Scouts Canada and I’ve donated blood over 50 times. I go every two months.
How did you first get involved with Alliance Alarms?
When I first started I was a stay-at-home Mom and my next door neighbour was the VP at that time and he knew me personally and asked me if I wanted a part-time job. I agreed to the part-time job and I was working three days a week doing exactly what I’m doing now. So that’s how I got into it. That’s how I generally got my jobs, people would phone me and say: “do you want this job?” because they know me personally. I have integrity, I’m a perfectionist and when I take something on, I take it until the end I don’t just take it for a minute.
What about your career are you most proud of?
I’m very proud of how I handle my collections. I usually get an 80% return rate. I believe that when you do collections with people, you don’t threaten them. You need to be compassionate and you need to use some honey and that always has worked for me. I know that quite often when I’m getting a pat on the back it’s because of my collections and how I treat people. You treat the people how you want to be treated and you get what you would like to get. So I guess that’s my biggest thing is that I use the Golden Rule.
Did you think 25 years ago that this is something that you’d be doing?
For 25 years? I would have to say, probably yes. I am of the era where you got a job, you worked well at it and you stayed. You were loyal to the people that hired you and unless you got laid off you stayed there because you want to do a good job for them. You can see the company grow, you know? I’m just that person who’s loyal to the company and I like it here and I like the people and I like the owners and I’ve always been treated fairly so it’s a good reason to stay. I want to be in this position and I enjoy my job.
What’s your secret to this kind of longevity with a company?
My secret is that you take every day as it goes by. This becomes your family. I often will say this is my home. I spend more hours here than I do at home and I guess if you like the people that you work with and you like your job, it’s easy to be here. It’s just a simple thing that makes sense. It’s one of those things that if you always get along with people, if you’re wrong and you say you’re wrong, you’ll be happy where you are. I really like it here. They can’t get rid of me that easily!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Talking to my customers and my coworkers (my family). Some people you deal with more often and when a customer says to you, thank you you’ve been so helpful even though I’m not dealing with exactly what I do, I have been here a long time and I have so much knowledge that I can help throughout a customers conversation and if I don’t know I can direct them to the right place because I’ve been here so long. That’s one of the most important parts of my job is that I know what I’m doing, I know how to help the customers and I know where to point them to if they need help and I like to talk to them. Sometimes you can be like a bartender and get stories from people that have nothing to do with the job but because you’re on the phone, so that’s when compassion comes in. It’s part of your job to be nice to people but I like to be nice to people so I like to be helpful. My claim to fame is that I’m very nice to talk to on the phone and people have told me so, so I know I am.
It doesn’t feel like work?
No it doesn’t. I even have plants in my office so I’m gardening here too! I know that when I come to work, I’m with my family. These people are my family. Personally, I come from a very big family so I’m used to this kind of movement and level of stuff going on daily. I’m used to all of the different personalities here at work, it’s easier to adapt coming from a big family. People treat you nicely so you know, what’s not to like? The customers, in my whole career I’ve maybe been yelled at once and I didn’t take it personally. I understood that person was having a bad day and I just happened to be on the other end of the phone. It didn’t matter who it was at the other end of the phone, it could have been anybody. I love my job and I love it here!
